Baby Shoes - 6 Criteria To Buy The Best For Your Baby

Dressing your baby in a stylish outfit isn't complete without baby shoes. However, you need to be aware of some health facts before you rush out and buy those cute shoes in the boutique baby store. To begin with, baby shoes are only necessary once your baby starts to walk. In fact, 6 weeks after they start to walk is the best time to start putting on the first shoes.

This is because the bones in a baby's feet are soft and easily misshapen. To emphasis this point, remember the old Eastern tradition of binding the baby's feet so that they never grew bigger, even as an adult? This shows how easily the bones can be crushed until the feet have grown. Shoes that are too small can cause skin irritations and even ingrown toenails.

To measure that the baby shoe fits correctly, place the width of your thumb between the largest toe and the edge of the shoe. This is the same as half an inch longer than the longest toe. If it fits, the shoe is OK to buy. Buying too large a size of baby shoe isn't good either. Your baby is already learning how to walk, imagine trying in a shoe that's too big! Check by watching to see if the heel slips off when your baby is standing on tip-toe. If it does, go down a size.

What about the material of the shoe? Some brands make cute imitation adult shoes but they can be damaging for your baby's feet. The baby shoe needs to be flexible - does it fold into the palm of your hand? A good test of flexibility. The shoe needs to be made of porous material like leather, suede, cloth or canvas to prevent uncomfortable sweating. The sole should be made of non-slippery material such as leather, suede or for real grip, try the grooved rubber soles.

These really prevent the wobbles turning into an accident. What about the shape of the shoe? Remember, you are trying to ensure that your baby shoes allow your baby the freedom to learn how to walk. Shape is important. Try to buy shoes that are oval or square to match the natural shape of the foot.

Baby shoes that are high-tops will stay on longer than low-cut styles but ensure that the ankle can move freely. And what about closures? Try to buy Velcro or elastic closures for easy 'putting-on'. Laces can cause accidents if your baby trips over them. Once you have these criteria matched, you can choose any designs from novelty animal baby shoes to the traditional look. And don't just choose from baby shops or department stores. Have a look online to find unique brands and styles.
